Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie became one of Hollywood’s most iconic “it” couples after first meeting in 2003 on the set of Mr. And Mrs. Smith. At the time, Jolie was enjoying being a single mother, while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston (they later split in 2005). Looking back, Jolie revealed in a 2007 interview with Vogue that it wasn’t really love at first sight; she and Pitt just made a good team.

“Because of the film, we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things, and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened,” Jolie said. “I think a few months in I realized, ‘God, I can’t wait to get to work.’ . . . Anything we had to do with each other, we just found a lot of joy in it together and a lot of real teamwork. We just became kind of a pair.”

In an interview during the 2018 Parade, Jolie revealed that she and Pitt never take on projects at the same time so that one of them is always available for their six children. “He takes the kids to school; he visits me on set with the kids. I’m home for dinner, or I’m there for breakfast. We’re together all the time. We plan,” Jolie said. She emphasized that there is never a period when she and Pitt are pulled apart and they are very homely.

Back in January 29, 2012, while speaking with CBS News, Pitt revealed that they were “getting a lot of pressure from the kids” to get engaged. “It means something to them and they’re, you know, they have questions when their friends’ parents are married and why is that?” Pitt said. “We will someday. We will. … [But the kids say], ‘Get mommy a ring!’ Okay, I will, I will.” In April 2012, Pitt and Jolie confirmed that they were engaged.

During their honeymoon in Malta, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie mixed business with pleasure by filming their movie “By the Sea,” where they played a married couple who developed a sexual attraction to their neighbors. This was the first time the couple had worked together on screen since “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” in 2005. Making the project even more special, Jolie wrote and directed the film as an independent project just for fun.

In March 2015, Jolie revealed that she had her ovaries removed to reduce her risk of cancer after a blood test showed possible early detections. Even though her tumor test results came back negative, Jolie still decided to undergo surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes to lower her risk. Jolie said that when she phoned Pitt with the initial blood test results, he immediately boarded a plane. She explained that moments like these in life bring clarity and help us realize what really matters.

However, on September 20, 2016, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt citing irreconcilable differences and requested physical custody of their six children with visitation rights for Pitt. She did not request child or spousal support. In a statement to PEOPLE, Jolie’s attorney asked for privacy for the family during this difficult time. Pitt expressed his sadness over the divorce but stated that the well-being of their kids matters most. On April 13, 2019, Pitt and Jolie became legally single.
